Watercolour Seminar in Island 2009

Watercolors for 100 years was the name of seminar held in The Reykjavik Art Museum http://www.artmuseum.is/desktopdefault.aspx, in collaboration with NAS (Nordiska Akvarellsällskapet) and SIM (Assosiation of Icelandic artists) on june 27th 2009. Art historian Hrafnhildur Schram began with a lecture about the pioneers of Icelandic modernism focusing on Asgrímur Jonsson, Guðmundur Thorsteinsson, Nína Tryggvadóttir and Höskuldur Björnsson (a reletively unknown and self tought watercolorist) The second lecture was from art historian Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson who spoke of watercolorists from the abstract era that were focusing on colors and form, artists like Svavar Guðnason, Eiríkur Smith, Guðmunda Andrésdóttir and Hafsteinn Austmann. During the brake guests were offerd caterings, fresh drinks, coffie, candy and baked kleinur. After the brake artist Halldór Ásgeirsson made a performance with water, colour and light in a dialogue with a piano piece by an Icelandic composer. The final lecturer was artist and art critic JBK Ransu who spoke of watercolour in contemporary art. He focused on artworks that point them spectatour towards that which is absent in the picture and mentioned works by artists such as Sólveig Aðalsteinsdóttir, Þorvaldur Þorsteinsson, Harpa Árnadóttir and Halldór Ásgeirsson. The seminar ended with a panel discussion that the lecturers and performance artist attended and was open for questioning from guests. Around 75 people attended the seminar.
